A seamless tube made of 316L stainless steel is wound into a coil. A high-pressure fluid flows through the inside of the coil, while another fluid flows over the outside. The coiled shape creates swirling vortices (Dean Vortices) that break up stagnant fluid layers, enabling extremely efficient heat transfer. The seamless 316L construction provides the mechanical strength to contain high pressures and the chemical resistance to survive corrosive environments, all within a compact, durable, and reliable package.

The Key Advantage: Why a "Coiled" Tube?
  • The coil shape is not just for saving space. It fundamentally changes how the fluids behave, dramatically improving performance.
  • Induced Swirl & Turbulence (Dean Vortices): As fluid flows through a curved pipe (the coil), centrifugal force pushes the fluid outward. This creates a twin-vortex circulation pattern known as Dean Vortices. This secondary flow constantly mixes the fluid, forcing it from the center of the tube to the wall and back again. The result is much higher heat transfer efficiency (often 2-4x higher) compared to a straight tube.
  • Centrifugal Force on the Shell Side: If the shell-side fluid is also flowing, the coil shape directs it into a helical path. This creates its own turbulence, scrubbing the outside of the tube and preventing insulating "boundary layers" of stagnant fluid from forming.
  • Compact, Long Flow Path: You can fit hundreds of feet of continuous tubing into a small cylindrical volume. This provides a very long residence time for heat transfer within a tiny footprint.
  • Thermal Stress Management: The coil can expand, contract, and even slightly vibrate with temperature changes. This reduces the massive thermal stresses that would crack a rigid, straight-tube heat exchanger.

 


Application

 

  • The ASTM A269 TP316L seamless coil is submerged inside the tank.
  • Cold water or a coolant is pumped through the coil at high pressure.
  • The turbulent flow inside the coil (Dean Vortices) aggressively picks up heat from the tube wall.
  • The hot reacting chemicals in the tank circulate around the outside of the coil, transferring their heat through the thin, corrosion-resistant 316L wall.
  • The heated coolant exits the coil, carrying the dangerous reaction heat away with it, keeping the reactor at a safe, stable temperature.
  • The seamless construction guarantees no coolant leaks into the expensive chemical batch, and the 316L resists corrosion from the reactive chemicals.

It's genuine 321H — titanium-stabilized, so no worries about sensitization or intergranular corrosion during welding. Our welder said it welded nicely with no cracking.
